Walking Proof Wins Independent Music Award

Awards have always seemed like a strange concept to me, especially when it comes to music. A small group of individuals decide which work of art is better than another work of art. It’s so subjective and idiosyncratic. Having said that, it does feel amazing to win!

My documentary Walking Proof which chronicles the two weeks I spent in the studio recording my debut full length album It’s Not An Excuse, It’s A Reason has won Best Long Form Video at this year’s Independent Music Awards! It’s such an honour to receive such positive reactions to something I poured my heart into and worked on nonstop for over a year. The film premiere, 5 star reviews and now this – it’s very humbling.

Voting for the fan choice award (a.k.a. “Vox Pop”) is still open until July 18th so, if you haven’t already, get on that and help put the icing on this metaphorical cake: Vote for Walking Proof! And, lastly, if you haven’t seen the film yet, it’s included for free with the physical version of It’s Not An Excuse, It’s A Reason so check it out and enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Times Two

Earlier this month, I made my way around the Sun again. That is to say that March 9th marked the anniversary of the date I was born. Chelsea wanted to skip school to spend the day with me but I convinced her not to. This gave me an opportunity to spend the day enjoying some one-on-one time with Skyler, my beautiful son.

When Chelsea got home that night, she brought with her some delicious food from one of our favourite vegan restaurants in Toronto and we spent a wonderful quiet evening together. When her birthday came around on March 25th, I got a chance to spoil her back with some yummy vegan eats in celebration of her special day.

There really is no other way I would have wanted to spend my birthday and I think I can safely say that Chelsea feels the same way. I love her more with each passing day and I am so grateful to have such an amazing woman in my life who has given me the gift of a wonderful son and has shown me nothing but support in every way possible.

2013: A Year in Review

2013 was a busy year for me as a solo artist with the physical release of It’s Not An Excuse, It’s A Reason, the premiere of my documentary Walking Proof, the release of my first music video, my tour out east, two HMA nominations, and my return to acting amongst many other things which all included doing a ton of press to promote each venture.

Most importantly, I had the privilege of spending nearly every day with my beautiful wife Chelsea and adorable son Skyler by my side. We traveled to Florida and Los Angeles together and I experienced the honour that was my first Father’s Day. I learned to appreciate the little things in life that mean most of all… Like Sky’s very first birthday!

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen our first family Christmas photo together back in December 2012. Even though we’re vegan, we like to keep it cheesy. Here we are last month posing for our second annual (vegan) cheesy Christmas photo. Half sincerity, half hilarity.

Our second Christmas together as a family was a highlight because, this time around, Skyler was old enough to really interact with our extended families, including his new cousins, and he quickly became a pro at opening his own gifts – something he learned on his birthday. At only fifteen months of age, he now has his first guitar.

Before we knew it, it was time to ring in the new year. I don’t usually drink (except for two or three celebratory adult beverages I have each year) so I blame the beer I consumed on New Year’s Eve for this terribly awkward yet awesome moment I captured of Chels and I as the clock struck twelve and the year 2014 began.

Thank you for all the love and support I received in 2013. With your help, I achieved many of the goals I set for myself. I’m working on a lot of new music and staying focused on what I want to attract into my life this year. I am grateful for my health, my family, my friends, and my fans. Life is what you make it and I plan on continuing the pursuit of living in the moment and appreciating the little things that matter most.
